The ‘ring melt’ has as a result many extraordinary properties. If its constituents are synthesized as rings before being concentrated together, so that they are permanently unlinked, then the polymers form a fluid, each chain able to diffuse around its neighbours. If, however, they are linked in an overlapping state, then they form a structure like a three-dimensional molecular chain mail. Although there are no rubber-like, or vulcanized, cross-links, this material is a solid—it cannot flow. To be able to tune between liquid and solid with the aid of no more than long-range topological quantities, such as linking, is a remarkable property of soft matter.
